Remember Christmas as a kid?

Read Luke 1:26-33. ... you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son ....

Wasn't it great to be a kid at Christmas? You didn't have to do anything. You could just sit back, watch mom and dad do their part and wait for Christmas day to come! Until I grew up, I never realized all the hard work mom and dad put in to making Christmas so great, especially for five boys who deserved lumps of coal in their stockings!

That's just like God our Father. He put a lot of thought and effort into the first Christmas. He first announced it the day Adam and Eve disobeyed Him (see Genesis 3:15). In the following centuries He made many promises about how His Son would become one of us and suffer and die to save us from our sins.

Finally it came time for God to set His plans into motion. First, He had to choose a human mother for His Son. He could have chosen any of David's descendents, but He chose a girl from a little town called Nazareth. He sent the angel Gabriel to tell her the good news.

Mary was completely amazed. Like every one of us, she was an undeserving sinner. Yet God forgave her sins for the sake of His Son and chose her to be that Son's human mother. No child sitting in front of a Christmas tree ever felt the excitement Mary felt knowing the mighty Son of God was growing in her womb. This was the Child who would reign over King David's throne forever.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for all You did for me through Your Son. Help me celebrate Your incomparable love this Christmas and always. In His Name. Amen.
